Paul Lewin

Paul Lewin was born in Manchester and studied at Stockport College, completing a BA (hons) degree in Fine Art at Bristol Polytechnic in 1989. Since leaving college he has lived and worked in the South West of Britain, and his home is now in West Penwith, the western most tip of Cornwall.  Predominantly a painter of the coast and sea, Paul has emerged as one of the leading contemporary coastal painters in the Southwest. With over 45 solo exhibitions, and many more mixed shows over the past 20 years. His paintings can be found in collections throughout the UK, Germany, Mexico, USA, Australia and the Far East. One recent commission includes six works for Cunard to be hung in their new cruise liner Queen Mary II, launched in 2004.

Paul is A fluent, plein air painter, most of his painting is done outside, spending the day out in the open, until the light goes. With his unique mixed media technique incorporating watercolour, gouache, pastel, pencil and charcoal, he produces paintings of extraordinary depth, richness and detail.  Rugged promontories of rocks and coves with flashes of brilliant vegetation stretch into the distance, against  the reflection of the  sun on the rippling sea.  He is an avid walker and really knows and understands the cliffs and shoreline of the coastal peninsular near his home.  His relationship with the landscape is driven by his daily connection with it and his understanding  of its ever changing, shifting perspective in different seasons and weather.
